Water is a ubiquitous chemical substance that is composed of hydrogen and oxygen and is vital for all known forms of life.

In typical usage, water refers only to its liquid form or state, but the substance also has a solid state, ice, and a gaseous state, water vapor or steam. Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface. On Earth, it is found mostly in oceans and other large water bodies, with 1.6% of water below ground in aquifers and 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation. Oceans hold 97% of surface water, glaciers and polar ice caps 2.4%, and other land surface water such as rivers, lakes and ponds 0.6%. A very small amount of the Earth's water is contained within biological bodies and manufactured products.

Water on Earth moves continually through a cycle of evaporation or transpiration (evapotranspiration), precipitation, and runoff, usually reaching the sea. Over land, evaporation and transpiration contribute to the precipitation over land.

Clean, fresh drinking water is essential to human and other lifeforms. Access to safe drinking water has improved steadily and substantially over the last decades in almost every part of the world. There is a clear correlation between access to safe water and GDP per capita. However, some observers have estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability. A recent report (November 2009) suggests that by 2030, in some developing regions of the world, water demand will exceed supply by 50%. Water plays an important role in the world economy, as it functions as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical substances and facilitates industrial cooling and transportation. Approximately 70% of freshwater is consumed by agriculture.

Is it possible to create some warmer water from a warm water source by using a vacuum and compressor?
Q. Take a perfect vacuum with 2 compartments. The 2 compartments are separated/connected by a compressor. The 2nd compartment has a pipe running through it with a fluid at temperature t. Now, lets take x amount of (pure) water at temp t (note that it is at same temp as fluid in 2nd compartment). Can one create from the x amount of water, (x-z) of water at temp (t+y) in the 2nd compartment, by passing the former x amount of water through the 1st compartment? As the water pass through the 1st compartment, some of the water should evaporate in the 1st compartment, resulting in some pressure in the 1st compartment. If the compressor is used to pump some of the vapour from the 1st compartment into the 2nd compartment to a pressure higher than that… [cont.]

A. No. In a closed system the energy remains the same. Running any sort of equipment powered from the outside will increase the overall energy level by the amount of power fed in.

How to make the hot water last longer?
Q. My house is not too too old, but not new. When I move it, i was nine, the owner son just graduate from university. The owner build the house. So that's about how old is the house. Everytime I take a shower, it's like a race, I have to do it as fast as possible before the hot water runs out. A handy man had come over, and he said and switch the temperature of the hot water hotter (he did it at the hot water production machine located at the laundry room), that's all he can do. But switching the hot water temperature hotter doesn't help make hot water last longer. I thought it was just me taking shower too long, but I ask my friend, and she said she took very long and hot water still did not run out. How to make hot water don't run out so… [cont.]

A. I assume you have an electric water heater. If so I suspect one of the elements is burned out or one of the thermostats is bad. Electric water heaters have two thermostats and two heating elements. If one of the elements burns out or one of the thermostats quits working you don't get enough hot water. But first connect a hose to the outlet at the bottom of the tank and run water out of it for 10 minutes. See if clearing the sediment helps. Sometimes sediment keeps the bottom element from working right. If it doesn't help then it is either a thermostat or heating element in which case you should call a service man and have it repaired.

How do I make hard water soft in my fish tank?
Q. I 'acquired' a goldfish in a very small tank before Christmas. He now has a bigger tank. When I set the new tank up I put the water from the old tank in the new tank and topped it up with water from the tap which had been treated for chlorine etc. I have been monitoring the water in the tank and everything appears to be OK or is heading that way except for the hardness of the water which hasn't changed. The water testing kit I have does not really tell me how to make hard water soft. Is there a product available that can help me out? (I am a beginner to fishkeeping and am on a very steep learning curve so be gentle!). Thanks for your help.

A. Do yourself and the fish a favour and leave the water be. Water is hard for a reason - it contains a higher level of minerals and other elements that end up resulting in this harder water. If you go and buy an additive from the store, it will add more elements that will try and fight with the existing elements, but won't actually remove them. The end result is unstable water, and this is much less healthy for the fish then just having water a bit to hard. These fis hare more adapatable and hardier then sometimes given credit for. Keep it simple, add nothing to the water except conditioner, and your fish will do well. If you really really want to get the water softer, then you should do it the proper way and actually remove those… [cont.]
