The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA, pronounced /ˈnæsə/) is an agency of the United States government, responsible for the nation's civilian space program. NASA was established by the National Aeronautics and Space Act on July 29, 1958, replacing its predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The agency became operational on October 1, 1958. NASA has led U.S. efforts for space exploration ever since, resulting in the Apollo missions to the Moon, the Skylab space station, and later the Space Shuttle. Currently NASA is supporting the International Space Station and developing new Ares I and V launch vehicles. In addition to the space program, it is also responsible for long-term civilian and military aerospace research. NASA Science is focused on better understanding Earth itself through the Earth Observing System, advancing heliophysics through the efforts of the Science Mission Directorate's Heliophysics Research Program, exploring bodies throughout the Solar System with advanced robotic missions such as New Horizons, and researching astrophysics topics, such as the Big Bang, through the Great Observatories and associated programs. Since February 2006 NASA's self-described mission statement is to "pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery, and aeronautics research." The National Aeronautics and Space Administration shares data with various national and international organizations such as from the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What is NASA planning to use after they scrap the shuttle? Q. I heard that NASA is abandoning the shuttle in the near future. Have we plans for another vehicle or program/method for getting into space? Are there private corporations that have promising vehicles/rockets for getting into space, does anyone know of any? How are we going to repair all this hardware we have floating around up there if we don't have a way into space in the near future? Thank you very much! It will be launched by the Ares I vehicle (also currently under development). Both Orion and Ares I are elements of NASA's Project Constellation, which plans to send human explorers back to the Moon by 2020, and then to Mars and the rest of the solar system. In 2006, NASA awarded Lockheed Martin the contract to design, develop, and build Orion. In December of 2008, to service the ISS and other equipment in orbit until Orion is functional (around 2015), NASA announced contracts for the cargo resupply of the International Space Station to SpaceX and Orbital Sciences Corporation. Q. The launch of Chandrayan -1 satellite by Indian Space Research Organisation has found water on the moon. This is considered to be a major discovery found for the first time.WE are delighted to know that it is done by Indian scientists in collaboration of NASA..How does this benefit a common man's life?. Asked by satabhisham - Fri Sep 25 04:57:11 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. Today it does not benefit a common man's life except in the sense that the survival of future generations will, at some point, require man as a species (and the common man's progeny) to move into space and colonize other worlds - first in our own solar system, and ultimately, on an interstellar basis. The discovery of water on the moon - less than 32 oz per ton as I understand it, means that with great effort, this vital resource can be extracted on the lunar surface to support a future low-gravity industrial base. As the moon is a low gravity jumping off point to other parts of the solar system, and our ability to live there will prepare us to live elsewhere (e.g. - Mars), the discovery of water represents our ability to 'live off the… [cont.] Answered by Bryan - Sat Sep 26 09:51:18 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "nasa" The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the agency responsible for the civilian space program of the United States, and for its long-term aerospace research.
