From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Humans are bipedal primates belonging to the species Homo sapiens (Latin: "wise man" or "knowing man") in Hominidae, the great ape family. They are the only surviving members of the genus Homo. Humans have a highly developed brain, capable of abstract reasoning, language, introspection, and problem solving. This mental capability, combined with an erect body carriage that frees the arms for manipulating objects, has allowed humans to make far greater use of tools than any other species. Mitochondrial DNA and fossil evidence indicates that modern humans originated in Africa about 200,000 years ago. Humans are widespread in every continent except Antarctica, with a total population of 6.8 billion as of November 2009. Like most higher primates, humans are social by nature. However, humans are uniquely adept at utilizing systems of communication for self-expression, the exchange of ideas, and organization. Humans create complex social structures composed of many cooperating and competing groups, from families to nations. Social interactions between humans have established an extremely wide variety of values, social norms, and rituals, which together form the basis of human society. Humans have a marked appreciation for beauty and aesthetics which, combined with the human desire for self-expression, has led to cultural innovations such as art, literature and music. Humans are noted for their desire to understand and influence their environment, seeking to explain and manipulate natural phenomena through science, philosophy, mythology and religion. This natural curiosity has led to the development of advanced tools and skills, which are passed down culturally; humans are the only species known to build fires, cook their food, clothe themselves, and use numerous other technologies. The individual s view of human nature would may have significant implications for the doctrine of political liberty and policy. People who view human nature positively tend to be more tolerant towards free speech and social experimentation. People who see humans as being driven by narrow self-interest, greed and other destructive passions are inclined to support measures that curbed freedom. Where do you fall and how does that impact how you think about fellow humans and the environment? Asked by Ottawa Mike - Thu Jun 18 15:54:38 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Humans are primarily driven by self-interest and greed. I wouldn't really consider that something negative though. Self interest and greed drive our economy and are responsible for basically every major technological advancement we've ever had. Even things like giving to charity or working for others are fulfilling self-interest. It's fulfilling a need for respect, morality, etc. Answered by Dawei - Thu Jun 18 16:16:37 2009 How are human rights likely to be endangered by the growth of the world's population? Q. The more people we have, the more restrictions we have to control the masses. Each new ordinance detracts from human rights. Much of this is brought about because there are always those who believe they can fix everything by enacting a new law, Some good examples would be: guns, seatbelts, civic codes, etc. Answered by kyle.keyes - Wed Mar 7 14:31:35 2007 How do a human die? With age, depending on the lifestyle, the body slowly weathers out. Death occurs when the brain stem stops functioning. This causes a halt in the involuntary activities like breathing, gagging, etc...The patient can be made to breathe only when put on a ventilator. The average lifespan for the human body was 60. But that's been increased, thanks to the high class healthcare services available these days. Diet is a great way to promote longevity. Some golden rules are: Never starve. Eat at the same times on all days. Always fill half the stomach with solid food , the next quarter with water or any other fluid and leave the rest quarter empty to allow the food to churn. Eat peacefully, chewing the food till it becomes fluid inside the mouth.
