Germany (pronounced /ˈdʒɜrməni/ ( listen)), officially the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, pronounced [ˈbʊndəsʁepuˌbliːk ˈdɔʏtʃlant] ( listen)), is a country in Central Europe. It is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; to the south by Austria and Switzerland; and to the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The territory of Germany covers 357,021 square kilometers (137,847 sq mi) and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With 81.8 million inhabitants in January 2010, it has the largest population among member states of the European Union, and it is also home to the third-largest number of international migrants worldwide. A region named Germania, inhabited by several Germanic peoples, has been known and documented before AD 100. Beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire, which lasted until 1806. During the 16th century, northern Germany became the centre of the Protestant Reformation. As a modern nation-state, the country was first unified amidst the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. In 1949, after World War II, Germany was divided into two separate states—East Germany and West Germany—along the lines of Allied occupation. Germany was reunified in 1990. West Germany was a founding member of the European Community (EC) in 1957, which became the European Union in 1993. It is part of the Schengen zone and adopted the European currency, the euro, in 1999. Germany is a federal parliamentary republic of sixteen states (Länder). The capital and largest city is Berlin. Germany is a member of the United Nations, NATO, G8, G20, OECD, and the WTO. It is a major power with the world's fourth largest economy by nominal GDP and the fifth largest in purchasing power parity. It is the second largest exporter and second largest importer of goods. In absolute terms, Germany allocates the second biggest annual budget of development aid in the world, while its military expenditure ranked sixth. The country has developed a high standard of living and established a comprehensive system of social security. It holds a key position in European affairs and maintains a multitude of close partnerships on a global level. Germany is recognised as a scientific and technological leader in several fields. GNU Free Documentation License How Bavaria is different from the rest of Germany? Q. How Bavaria is different from the rest of Germany? I am going to visit Austria and Munchen this summer. I suspect that Bavaria in terms of language, culture, and historical traditions closer to Austria than Germany. Are there any cities in Northern Germany that really different from Bavaria? How accurate my impression of Germany would be after visiting Munich? In other words, is this a Bavarian city/capital or a German city? Asked by tamerlan12 - Sat Jan 31 12:52:32 2009 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments A. Bavaria - the countryside where I live in - is probably more liberal than you would expect. Bavaria is a big state (in fact, Germany's biggest), and we're used to doing things our own way and we're famous for not caring about the federal government. Some people call us "little Texas", and maybe that's what we are. The famous German writer Goethe (or was it Schiller?) named us "a stubborn mountain folk", but whoever it was, he copied from an ancient Roman writer who wrote the same. We're not really conservative here; when I was a young voter, it was Bavarians who first voted the Greens into regional parliaments. Here in Bavaria, we're not much concerned about federal politics, unless it concerns us; and I think and sincerely hope that in… [cont.] Answered by Alwin E - Sat Jan 31 16:35:32 2009 what is the temperature in indoor in germany in mid to late nov? Q. i heard that in germany, they switch on heater indoor .may i know how warm they will on till? is it advisable to wear long johns? Asked by snow - Sun Nov 2 20:16:32 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Many (or even most) Germans like an indoor temperature of 21-22 C in their living rooms, and in their bedrooms, some 16-18 C. That's way too cold for me. I prefer 25-26 C in BOTH, but most Germans will tell you that it's healthier to sleep in cooler rooms. I don't agree with that. In flats with central heating, you'll maybe encounter something that's called the "Nachtabsenkung": lowering the temperature of the central heating at night to save, as they say, energy. Which is absolute BS, as it doesn't save anything, because the big water boiler has to be heated up again the next morning, consuming more energy than is saved. But in some houses, they'll automatically switch the heating to a low temperature between 10 pm and 5 am. Sometimes it… [cont.] Answered by Alwin E - Mon Nov 3 15:06:50 2008 I heard the drinking age in Germany has changed to 18 for all alcohol. Is this true, can someone confirm?
Q. I have a friend in Germany who said that the laws have changed and the age is now 18 (instead of 16) for alcohol. However, he is very new to the country and speaks terrible German. Can someone more knowledgeable help me out? Asked by hhhh2w32 - Mon Dec 3 05:52:00 2007 - - 2 Answers - 2 Comments A. I live in Germany and know for fact that its still 16+, but will be changing to 18+ on the 1st January, 08. They have already wanted to do this since 2003 as far as I can remember, but got to many protests against it. so yeah, If your friend isn't 18, I'd advise him to live it up till the shortly coming 2008 new law. good luck;) Answered by Graceland R - Mon Dec 3 10:57:47 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "germany" Germany is a modern European nation (formally Bundesrepublik Deutschland, or Federal Republic of Germany) whose recorded ethnic, territorial, and political history reaches back to the 1st century BCE.
