Drinking is the act of consuming water (or a beverage that contains water) through the mouth. Water is required for many of life’s physiological processes. Both excessive and inadequate water intake are associated with health problems.

Physiology

A Canada goose drinking

A daily intake of 3-6 liters of water is required for the normal physiological functioning of the human body, depending on ambient weather conditions and diet (especially salt and sugar intake). The absolute minimum over the long term is about 1.6 liters (600 ml for urine, 200 ml for fecal losses, and 800 ml for losses via the skin and lungs). This includes water contained in food (i.e., it is not essential to actually drink 1-2 liters of water a day for survival, though it is often recommended for good health).

The sensation caused by dehydration of the body is called thirst. The sensation of thirst is a dry feeling in the back of the throat and an intense desire to drink fluids. Thirst is regulated by the hypothalamus in response to subtle changes in the body's electrolyte levels, and also as a result of changes in the volume of blood circulating.

What effect does drinking absinthe have on you?
Q. I drank absinthe last night but not the real stuff it was just 45% from Tesco's. The effect was unlike any other alcoholic drink I've had; I went really sleepy and then I got really depressed and sobbed uncontrolably for a solid half an hour! I had horrible visions going through my head of stuff that had got me down through my life. This morning I have no hangover, no headache o'r anything! Usually I am violently sick the morning after drinking.

A. None watsoever except the alcoholic effect. It's a myth that absinthe is or ever was hallucinogenic, as extensive tests on surviving 19th century bottles have proven again and again. Thujone, the infamous suposedly "hallucinogenic" substance is not under those concentrations. Furthermore, to become hallucinogenic you had to ingest an enourmous ammount, pounds, of wormwood. You would die of a blownup stomach or from it's toxicity before you saw pink elephants... Besides, in the process of distillation thujone almost disappears completely. Please enjoy absinthe for what is is: An exquisite distillate, grape alcohol distilled with up to 9 different herbs, the main one is not even wormwood but green anis. In this very slow and complex… [cont.]

Why drinking water after eating amla(Indian Gooseberry) gives a sweet taste to mouth? Is the reverse possible?
Q. We all have experinced that immedietely drinking water after eating or while taking amla (Indian Gooseberry) gives a sweet taste to mouth. Why this happens ? Is the reverse case possible where first we take a sweet fruit (thing) and after eating it the mouth becomes bitter/sour ?
Asked by bsure - Mon Oct 15 03:29:19 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, the reverse is possible. After eating the Indian melon (orange in colour), if one drinks water, one can feel some bitterness/sourness in the tongue. Therefore it is always advised that after eating melon, one should wait for atleast half an hour before drinking water.

This entry should contain ONLY quotes about alcohol in general; quotes about beer or wine specifically should go in those respective entries. An alcoholic beverage is a drink containing ethanol, commonly known as alcohol — although in chemistry the definition of alcohol includes many other compounds. Alcoholic beverages are divided into three general classes: beers, wines, and spirits.
