A drink, or beverage, is a liquid which is specifically prepared for human consumption. In addition to filling a basic human need, beverages form part of the culture of human society.

Types of beverage

A carbonated beverage.

Water

Main article: Drinking water

Despite the fact that all beverages contain water, water itself is not a beverage. The word beverage has traditionally been defined as not referring to water.

Alcoholic beverages

Main article: Alcoholic beverage

An alcoholic beverage is a drink that contains ethanol, commonly known as alcohol (although in chemistry the definition of “alcohol” includes many other compounds).

Beer has been a part of human culture for 8000 years. In Germany, and many other European countries such as the United Kingdom and Ireland, drinking beer and alcoholic beverages in the local pub is a very cultural tradition.

What are the laws regarding serving complimentary alcoholic beverages?
Q. I am looking into serving complimentary alcoholic beverages in my local business. I do not have my bar card or a liquor license. These beverages will be served during special events only and will contain less than 5 oz of alcohol. Does anyone know the state and local laws for doing this?

How is the permission for selling of alcoholic beverages in the State of Massachusetts?
Q. Are convenience stores and diners allowed to sell alcoholic beverages in the State of Massachusetts? If they are, may they sell distilled spirits, like whiskey? If they're not, where can I found distilled spirits? Only in liquor stores?

A. Alcohol Licenses ("beer & wine" and "all alcohol") are assigned by the state to each city/town on a per capita (population) basis. Each city/town has a committee that regulates the issuing of these licenses. Most, if not all, convenience stores and supermarkets have a "beer & wine" license and may not sell hard liquor. The only places I know you can get hard liquor (distilled spirits) is a liquor store. There are also licenses ("beer & wine" and "all alcohol") for the serving of alcohol, which are also regulated on a per capta basis.

Is it safe for young children to consume products and beverages containing Nutrasweet/Equal?
Q. Is it safe for young children to consume products and beverages that contain Nutrasweet/Equal? We only drink sugar free beverages in our home due to my husband's diabetes. We usually have a pitcher of Crystal Light in the fridge, and ice cream in that contains either Nutrasweet or Splenda. When my grandchildren visit, is there any possible harm in them consuming a reasonable amount of these sugar substitutes?
