A valve is a device that regulates the flow of a fluid (gases, fluidized solids, slurries, or liquids) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Valves are technically pipe fittings, but are usually discussed as a separate category. Valves are also found in the human body. For example, there are several which control the flow of blood in the chambers of the heart and maintain the correct pumping action (see heart valve article). Valves are used in a variety of contexts, including industrial, military, commercial, residential, and transportation. Oil and gas, power generation, mining, water reticulation, sewerage and chemical manufacturing are the industries in which the majority of valves are used. Plumbing valves, such as taps for hot and cold water are the most noticeable types of valves. Other valves encountered on a daily basis include gas control valves on cookers and barbecues, small valves fitted to washing machines and dishwashers, and safety devices fitted to hot water systems. Valves may be operated manually, either by a hand wheel, lever or pedal. Valves may also be automatic, driven by changes in pressure, temperature or flow. These changes may act upon a diaphram or a piston which in turn activates the valve, examples of this type of valve found commonly are safety valves fitted to hot water systems or steam boilers. More complex control systems using valves requiring automatic control based on an external input (i.e., regulating flow through a pipe to a changing set point) require an actuator. An actuator will stroke the valve depending on its input and set-up, allowing the valve to be positioned accurately, and allowing control over a variety of requirements. Valves are also found in the Otto cycle (internal combustion) engines driven by a camshaft, lifters and or push rods where they play a major role in engine cycle control. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How to unscrew a stuck tuba valve cap? Q. The top of my tubas valve has become stuck, and I need to undo the valve cap so I can get it out and oil it. We've already tried brute force, pliers and hot water. Any other suggestions? Asked by Thomas A - Wed Feb 6 04:06:05 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I would not use a torch or a lighter but rather a heat gun. Heat it gently as well, Too hot and you will cause a discoloration. Also see if you can get some penetrating oil in there. bg Answered by Bill G - Wed Feb 6 08:42:02 2008 If you learn one valve instrument, can you transfer the fingerings to another? Q. I'm learning to play baritone, but I usually play trombone(a regular trombone). Its a three valve bari, and our valve trombone and a few of our trumpets and tubas are also three valve. Once I learn fingerings on baritone, can I just transfer it over to the other three valve instruments? Asked by Satans_Angel - Sat May 23 02:14:51 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes. I have a friend who plays saxaphone its different from 3 valve but he is able to play clarinet also. So yes you can transfer from 3 valve to 3 valve. the only thing you have to worry about it is getting used to the feel of the instrument. I hope this helped! =] Answered by Jeremy - Sat May 23 02:26:42 2009 Can I replace a sweated toilet water supply valve with compression fitting?
Q. I have an old water supply valve that is leaking. The valve has been sweated on. I was hoping not to call a plumber. Is the easiest thing to cut the valve off with a hacksaw and try and find some type of compression fitting? Any advice is appreciated. Asked by Allen - Mon Mar 3 19:50:58 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. you could as long as the water is off, you have the right compression shutoff size, and you have enough pipe to do it.
