Tap water (running water) is part of indoor plumbing, which became available in the developed world in the late 19th century and common in the mid-20th century.

The provision of tap water is a massive infrastructure of piping, pumps, and water purification works. The direct cost of the tap water alone, however, is a small fraction of that of bottled water, which can cost from 240 to 10,000 times as much for the same amount.

The availability of clean tap water brings major public health benefits. Usually, the same administration that provides tap water is also responsible for the removal and treatment before discharge or reclamation of wastewater.

In many areas, chemicals containing fluoride are added to the tap water in an effort to improve public dental health. In some countries, this remains a controversial issue for a portion of the population. See water fluoridation controversy.

Tap water may contain various types of natural but relatively harmless contaminants such as scaling agents like calcium carbonate in hard water and metal ions such as magnesium and iron, and odoriferous gases such as hydrogen sulfide. Local geological conditions affecting groundwater are determining factors of the presence of these substances in water.

Occasionally, there are health concerns regarding the leakage of dangerous biological or chemical contaminating agents into local water supplies when people are advised by public health officials not to drink the water, and stick to bottled water instead. An example is the recent discovery of potentially hazardous nitrates in the public water supply in Kingman, Arizona.

What are the effects of tap water on a baby?
Q. I just found out that my husband has been giving our baby tap water in her formula (she just started using it in the last few weeks). I thought he was using bottled water, but caught him making a bottle from the tap! Is there a reason to worry, should I have her tested for anything specific?

A. I just asked my doctor this on Monday. We took our daughter in for a well check visit. He said that as long as you are using city water it is fine. City/public water is treated so its okay. If you live in the country and or use well water its best for you to use distilled or nursery water. I hope this helps.

Does tap water in a humidifier create dust?
Q. I run my humidifier all winter long, and I have noticed I have a ridiculous amount of dust! Could using tap water in my humidifier cause dust? Should I use distilled water to prevent this? I do not have central air, live in an apartment, and keep doors and windows closed.

A. No it does not create dust but it does cause dust in the air to fall and settle wher it may have just remained in the air before. If you have excedingly hard water you may get a slight bit of calcium dust from that if you water is really that hard you need a water purifier.

Can I add flouride tap water to my aquarium?
Q. I hear you are suppose to cycle 15%-30% of your aquariums water, but can I add tap water? The water in my city (calgary) has fluoride in it. Will this poison the fish? Can I get drops, or do I just let the water sit for a few days before I put it in the tank?
Asked by Jay - Tue May 27 17:55:17 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The amount of flouride thats added to water is so small it will have no effect on the fish. In many parts of the world the natural water contains trace amounts of flouride that leaches from the ground naturally. If your local water doesn't contain any it is often added because it's a vital trace element for human health. Just use the normal water conditioner in case there is free chlorine residue in the water, that IS dangerous to your fish. Ian
