Wine is an alcoholic beverage, typically made of fermented grape juice. The natural chemical balance of grapes is such that they can ferment without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes or other nutrients. Wine is produced by fermenting crushed grapes using various types of yeast. Yeast consumes the sugars found in the grapes and converts them into alcohol. Different varieties of grapes and strains of yeasts are used depending on the type of wine being produced. Although other fruits such as apples and berries can also be fermented, the resultant wines are normally named after the fruit from which they are produced (for example, apple wine or elderberry wine) and are generically known as fruit wine or country wine (not to be confused with the French term vin de pays). Others, such as barley wine and rice wine (i.e., sake), are made from starch-based materials and resemble beer and spirit more than wine, while ginger wine is fortified with brandy. In these cases, the use of the term "wine" is a reference to the higher alcohol content, rather than production process. The commercial use of the English word "wine" (and its equivalent in other languages) is protected by law in many jurisdictions. Wine has a rich history dating back to around 6000 BC and is thought to have originated in areas now within the borders of Georgia and Iran. Wine first appeared in Europe at about 4500 BC in the Balkans, and was very common in ancient Greece, Thrace and Rome. Wine has also played an important role in religion throughout history. The Greek god Dionysus and the Roman equivalent Bacchus represented wine, and the drink is also used in Catholic Eucharist ceremonies and the Jewish Kiddush. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Does drinking water after drinking wine make you drunker, or get you drunk again, and why? Q. I've been a fan of wine for a long time. I have many friends that say wine is great, because after drinking wine, you can drink water, and get drunker or drunk again. Or after a night of drinking wine, in the morning if you drink water, you'll get drunk again. Being an avid wine fan, I have yet to ever experience this amazing phenomenon. So, is it true, and if so, why does it work. Asked by Axelpeddle - Sun Dec 30 23:49:45 2007 - - 5 Answers - 3 Comments A. I am an avid wine drinker and this is simply not true. Period. The end. Q. I found a recipe online for teriyaki chicken wings and it calls for 1/4 c of rice wine vinegar, I have red wine vinegar. Can I use this instead? Thanks in advance. Asked by MELISSA G - Tue Feb 12 10:27:06 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. yes you can use it. Generally, rice wine vinegar is a little less acidic than the red wine vinegar, but it really shouldn't affect the outcome. Also, rice wine is usually seasoned with a bit of sugar & salt. so you can add a touch of each if you think it necessary, but it will be fine.
