Beer is the world's oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic beverage and the third most popular drink overall after water and tea. It is produced by the brewing and fermentation of starches, mainly derived from cereal grains—most commonly malted barley, although wheat, maize (corn), and rice are widely used. Most beer is flavoured with hops, which add bitterness and act as a natural preservative, though other flavourings such as herbs or fruit may occasionally be included. Some of humanity's earliest known writings refer to the production and distribution of beer: the Code of Hammurabi included laws regulating beer and beer parlours, and "The Hymn to Ninkasi," a prayer to the Mesopotamian goddess of beer, served as both a prayer and as a method of remembering the recipe for beer in a culture with few literate people. Today, the brewing industry is a global business, consisting of several dominant multinational companies and many thousands of smaller producers ranging from brewpubs to regional breweries. The basics of brewing beer are shared across national and cultural boundaries. Beers are commonly categorized into two main types—the globally popular pale lagers, and the regionally distinct ales, which are further categorised into other varieties such as pale ale, stout and brown ale. The strength of beer is usually around 4% to 6% alcohol by volume (abv.) though may range from less than 1% abv., to over 20% abv. in rare cases. Beer forms part of the culture of beer-drinking nations and is associated with social traditions such as beer festivals, as well as a rich pub culture involving activities like pub crawling and pub games such as bar billiards. You know I've never tried it, but I like to think of myself as a beer Connoisseur. From the label it looks like it is aimed at the younger drinkers who really don't know what a good beer is. Check out this site. You can usually count on these guys. I like pilsner beer best myself, and a really good and inexpensive pilsner is LaBatt's Blue or Blue light. I'm just looking for opinions on what beers people prefer their beer battered brats be prepared in. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks! Asked by Matt S - Fri Mar 21 19:13:07 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. depends upon your likes and dislikes... I would go with an amber beer or darker to add the extra flavor from the beer. However, a lighter beer like a lager or pilsner would give you a little beer flavor, but a cleaner flavor of the brats. Answered by lots_of_laughs - Fri Mar 21 19:17:48 2008 What can you mix with beer to make different drinks?
Q. Our local bar only serves beer (draft, bottle & can), a few choice wines, and the malt beverages. I'ld like to discover different drinks that can be made with beer that do not require adding liquor. Recipes would be nice - I'd like to liven up the locals a little! Asked by Newt - Fri Jul 28 17:21:00 2006 - - 16 Answers - 1 Comments A. Experiment, you may be onto something here. I've tried it with Dr. Pepper, coke, etc... Cherry flavored beer? Vanilla Beer? eh, you never know. Good luck to you on this one. Maybe try getting some of those Torani flavored syrups. You may be onto something here...
