beerDefinition from Wiktionary, the free dictionary (Redirected from Beer) Jump to: navigation, search See also béerFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Beer is the world's most widely consumed and probably the oldest of alcoholic beverages; it is the third most popular drink overall, after water and tea. It is produced by the brewing and fermentation of starches, mainly derived from cereal grains—most commonly malted barley, although wheat, maize (corn), and rice are widely used. Most beer is flavoured with hops, which add bitterness and act as a natural preservative, though other flavourings such as herbs or fruit may occasionally be included. Some of humanity's earliest known writings refer to the production and distribution of beer: the Code of Hammurabi included laws regulating beer and beer parlours, and "The Hymn to Ninkasi", a prayer to the Mesopotamian goddess of beer, served as both a prayer and as a method of remembering the recipe for beer in a culture with few literate people. Today, the brewing industry is a global business, consisting of several dominant multinational companies and many thousands of smaller producers ranging from brewpubs to regional breweries. The basics of brewing beer are shared across national and cultural boundaries. Beers are commonly categorized into two main types—the globally popular pale lagers, and the regionally distinct ales, which are further categorized into other varieties such as pale ale, stout and brown ale. The strength of beer is usually around 4% to 6% alcohol by volume (abv) though may range from less than 1% abv, to over 20% abv in rare cases. Beer forms part of the culture of beer-drinking nations and is associated with social traditions such as beer festivals, as well as a rich pub culture involving activities like pub crawling and pub games such as bar billiards. GNU Free Documentation License What is the beer commercial with girls in matching outfits? Q. Ive seen this beer commercial like once on TV. Its not any of the mainstream beers like coors light, bud light, or miller light that are always on TV. The two girls have matching blue spandex jumpsuits with the beer's logo on it and they pretty much just go around talking about the beer. Molson Canadian Answered by BRAXATOR - Wed May 19 13:27:45 2010 What beer flavor compares to the finish of Bunnahabhain 1976 Scotch? Q. I mean mainly the aromatics. Not any exact beer but just the tye/style of beer that might compare. Asked by BEER CONSORTIUM - Wed Oct 28 20:04:16 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The best bet would be a hefeweizen. Since you need a comparison between the finishes of the two, many hefe's carry a phenolic note the result of 4-vinyl guaiacol. But this is a clove flavor and not the banana and ginger notes you get the this Scotch. Therefore, you might chose a wit beer. It has the added spice notes of coriander and orange. [Wait some wheats do have a banana note from (yes, yeast) amyl acetate).] I think it would be interesting to age one of these wheat beers in wood and specifically whisky wood. Hoegaarden Hacker-Pschorr Ayinger Answered by BEER - Sun Nov 1 14:42:35 2009 How much alcohol in beer is equivalent to a whole wine bottle?
Q. Wine is about 12.5% and beer is about 5%. How man beers are equal to a wine bottle? Asked by Jake - Thu Dec 31 16:56:17 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. A bottle of wine is about 9 units and a large beer is about 2(ish) so 4-5 beers. 5% beer is fairly strong so I would go with 4 beers to be on safe side.
