Low-alcohol beer (also called non-alcoholic or NA beer, small beer, small ale, or near-beer) is beer with very low or no alcohol content. Most low-alcohol beers are lagers, but there are some low-alcohol ales.

In the United States, beverages containing less than 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV) were legally called non-alcoholic, according to the now-defunct Volstead Act. Due to its very low alcohol content, non-alcoholic beer may be legally sold to minors in most American states.

In the United Kingdom, the following definitions apply by law (correct as of May 2007):

  • No alcohol or alcohol-free: not more than 0.05% ABV
  • Dealcoholised: over 0.05% but less than 0.5% ABV
  • Low-alcohol: not more than 1.2% ABV

In the rest of the European Union, beer must contain no more than 0.5% ABV if it is labelled "alcohol-free".

Although labeled as non-alcoholic, some beers may still contain small amounts of alcohol; as a result, some American states prohibit their sale to minors and even to young adults. In one state (Pennsylvania) persons must be 21 years of age or older to even consume non-alcoholic beer, or they will be cited for underage drinking.

  • Wisconsin law does not regulate non-alcoholic beer (less than 0.5% ABV), and it can be purchased without any age restrictions.
  • According to Michigan law, persons must be 18 or older to purchase "non-alcoholic beer" within the state.

In countries where alcohol advertising is forbidden or limited, non-alcoholic versions of popular brands of alcoholic beverages have been created for the purpose of advertisement.

Do you think beer is healthier than soda?
Q. As a beer lover myself, I personally think so. Most sodas are loaded with high fructose corn syrup and caffeine. According to some studies, kids drink up to 6 to 8 cans a day. No wonder we have so many fat kids waddling around. I personally think the kids would be better off if they drank one or two low alcoholic beers instead of all that soda. In parts of Belgium a few years ago some schools replaced sugary juice and soda with low-alcohol beer. Do you think those kids will be better off? I'm not suggesting we give kids lots of beer and get them tanked. The drinking age in many countries is 16 or 18, especially in Europe. Yet they seem to have lower incidences of obesity and binge drinking.

A. Just look at what comes out of you after you drink a beer. Cleans everything right out doesn't it?

After I drink alcohol (beer usually) my lower part of my legs have a numbness sensation?
Q. I usually notice this sensation when i drink beer. My legs feel like they are "falling asleep". It happens just after I take a couple of sips, and continues. I usually block it out after the first couple of beers and I don't really notice it after that. Could this be an allergic reaction or some sort of central nervous reaction. I am a 125 lb female and I drink pretty often, but I do not get drunk often.

A. alcohol in general, makes you numb, one or way or another. depends on the person in terms of how much you drink. whether it is just a few beers here and there or a whole lot of beers, wine etc you do experience numbness. I feel do get that numbness sensation in my legs as well but I tend to ignore it cause after a few more shots I hardly even pay attention to it. It is really in my opinion the effects of alcohol in general. You will notice you feel it more when you just drinking and drinking and just kinda positioned in one spot, minimal movements and so on. But if you get up and dance or run, you wont even feel numbness at all.

Are low/non alcoholic beers suitable for diabetics?
Q. I was advised by a dietician that low/non alcoholic beers contain higher sugar levels than most standard beers. Does anyone have any knowledge on this subject, or can recommend a suitable low alcohol beer such as Becks, St Pauli etc.
Asked by Tony G - Mon Dec 3 18:32:24 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The alcohol content is not the problem-- it is the sugar (carbohydrate) content and the glycemic index that makes all beer a bad beverage choice for diabetics. If beer you must have then go for the low carb choices, like Michelob Ultra. Your dietician is right, the low alcohol choices often have an even higher glycemic index than regular brews. Sorry.
